CHARACTER
NAME: Osomatsu Matsuno
CANON: Eiga no Osomatsu-san
CANON POINT: the morning of graduation
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND: Osomatsu-kun || Osomatsu-san || movie synopsis || Osomatsu Matsuno

Teen Osomatsu’s involvement in the movie is fairly minor, but he makes a big impact, nonetheless. As children, it was often said that the six brothers shared some sort of hivemind. They were always following Osomatsu, and doing what Osomatsu wanted to do. In the movie, we see a little bit of them acting similarly in their freshman year, to the point where their classmates simply refer to all of them as "Matsuno-kun," because they can't tell them apart. And, for a while, that suits Osomatsu just fine. Because that's the way things have always been. He's happy-go-lucky, loving high school.

It is only once we see their peers begin to gossip and turn on them that the beast rears its head. Osomatsu's desire to be accepted in high school finally upsets him enough that when he and one of his brothers come to a fork in the road, he splits off from him in anger. This was his choice in the beginning, and, since Osomatsu was their leader, the rest of his brothers followed suit. They begin to ignore each other, at home, at school, and don't respond unless their classmates call them by their first names.

PERSONALITY: Osomatsu as a teenager does not change much from the Osomatsu we see as an adult in the series. He is a loser, plain and simple. Even his name means "lousy." On official merchandise/videos, he's labelled as an idiot. He acts like he does not pay too much attention to his surroundings, so he gives off a very carefree attitude. Most of the time, he's as clueless as they come, whether he completely misses a point, or whether he spouts off an insult without meaning to (see: innocently insensitive), and he's pretty much okay with living like that.

Above everything else, Osomatsu wants to enjoy life and have a good time, even as a teenager. He loves to joke around. He's the type of person who wears a big dumb smile and may laugh during a disaster. This doesn't necessarily mean he is mean-spirited. It just means he can find something humorous about most circumstances, or that he cannot read the atmosphere. He doesn't think before he acts or says something. He just does it, especially if it means that he can have fun in the end. Osomatsu likes to take things as they come. He doesn't plan ahead, and he rolls with the punches. It's easy to get him to do something, or to go along with an idea (unless he thinks his own idea is better).

While it can be said that he is usually a happy-go-lucky person, if he gets mad, or things do not go his way, he will become vicious. Osomatsu is a sore loser, so he jumps into verbal fights with insults that hit below the belt.

The point where Osomatsu is coming from in the movie is right before the sextuplets all have a confrontation on the roof. Osomatsu is not a very happy individual. During the months where he's been apart from his brothers, he's probably the most despondent he's ever been inwardly. His desire to fit in at school is partly what drives him away from his brothers, so it is a rather rough time for him.

Deep down, he's hiding feelings of inadequacy. He wonders if he's not good enough to be on his own. Does he even want to be? Of course, he misses hanging out with his brothers, but all that matters to him is fitting in at school, and being an individual. At the moment, he doesn't care if he's causing a rift in his family, or forcing his brothers to be what they don't want to be.

School isn't all fun and games, but Osomatsu is trying to hide his actual feelings with his usual smile and jokes or pranks. He's the class clown, a natural goofball. When we first see him in the movie, he is actually flipping up a girl’s skirt (he continues to be useless around girls into his adult life). He’s not really a good student, either. He doesn’t attend any extracurricular activities, so he probably doesn’t have too many friends.

One good thing that Osomatsu's got going for him is that he truly loves his brothers, but that can also be seen as a negative. Because Osomatsu has grown up entirely too close to these other young men, he's become too dependent on them. He doesn't want to be separated from them, despite the fact that he wants to be his own person. I believe that he does not feel safe when his brothers are not around, and that Osomatsu does not know how to be an individual. Certainly, there are times when they annoy him, but Osomatsu cares about them deeply. He, in fact, may be a bit obsessed with them. Yes, he uses them to meet his own gains every so often, but he wants them all to have fun together in the end. He values their opinions of him, wants them all to like him, wants to be ranked their favorite brother (because Osomatsu knows that each of them has a favorite. they never say anything like this, but you just know, okay?). He knows he's growing up, and he doesn't want to. He's scared of separating from his family, scared of becoming an adult, scared of making a life on his own. Actually, he probably cannot imagine a life without his brothers.

There is not much else to be said about him. He, like any normal teenager, is suffering from the pressures of high school going into adulthood. He has two conflicting sides; he wants to be an individual, versus he wants to be with his family. He's not happy being alone, and he's not happy if people don't treat him with respect. I think he is probably very depressed, but he's too stubborn to voice this. It's easier to pretend to be happy, even when he's in pain.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Osomatsu is your average Joe Human. He has no super powers, but he does seem to have a few things he is good at. One of those things is leadership. For some reason, as a child, this loser was able to get his brothers to do things, whether it was through some half-assed speech, or simply because his own voice was stronger than theirs. He's also extremely lazy, so if he can talk someone else into doing the footwork for him, more power to him.

When women or money is added into the equation, Osomatsu's motivation is increased. He is a young man that will do anything for a buck, or for a hug. He would like to be more appealing to his childhood friend, Totoko, and he has no qualms about bending over backwards for her, even as a teenager. In the movie, he showers her in compliments.

Lastly, Osomatsu is seemingly in a good mood. He can take heavy situations and make jokes out of the circumstances, using his quick wit.

INVENTORY: just the clothes on his back (which is an Akatsuka High School uniform, consisting of a grey jacket, tan sweatervest, white dress shirt, green tie, blue and green plaid pants, and black loafers. also underwear and socks) and a schoolbag with a few school supplies in it—like a pen, a pencil, a red canvas notebook.

MOONBLESSING: Iris, for mostly deer things. and maybe jellyfish tentacles.

SAMPLES

Sample 1 from Deerington (to show dialogue)

He scratched at the protruding deer ear that had grown in just a little over a week ago. Antlers were forming, as well, which bothered Osomatsu a lot at first because they gave him a terrible headache. Now, looking at himself in the mirror, he found that he did not mind the ears and antlers that much. Even the fluffy tail was growing on him, though it was strange. He felt like those people who went to fur conventions in costume. Only this wasn't a costume, it was very real.

For a while, living on Lunatia had been a blast. Osomatsu ran into other people, people like him, who'd been brought from their own worlds and dropped into this one. Moonblessed, they were called by the natives, beings from other worlds that could generate Chroma through hand-holding and... other things. Osomatsu gulped as he finally pulled himself away from the mirror.

He liked it well enough, the adventure, meeting people from different worlds, exploring. One thing he couldn't overcome, though, was the loneliness. It just about crushed him, being away from his brothers. That, in turn, made him angry. He didn't want to miss them. He didn't want to think about what they were doing, if they'd graduated, or if they wondered where he was. He was an adult... almost! He didn't need them!

“Geez, they’re still here with me, even when they’re not here!” he grumbled out loud and left his apartment to keep himself busy. He was sort of at a loss, not going to school every day, so he usually went to the beach, or the theater, or a mall. Most of the time, Osomatsu went alone. He hoped that he'd meet new people here, eventually, maybe even be able to hold hands and Moonlace with someone... Lofty goals, for someone like him, but Osomatsu believed he could do it. He had to prove to himself, to everyone, that he could survive on his own!

Though... it would have been nice if he knew at least one person from home, here. He sighed, shaking off the depression that was trying to gnaw away at him. Osomatsu walked down the street with a smile. Today, he thought, today he'd make a friend!
